self-esteem
Dec. 14th, 2015 09:33 pmSudden realisation: since virtue consists of loving everything in the proper amounts, cultivating healthy self-esteem is an ethical duty. Whether we get it is not for us to decide, but we have to try.
This is an important realisation for me, because I've been wondering for a long time why it's worth having self-respect. I've needed to find a way to justify the considerable effort of working towards it after years of depression. Justifications based on the benefit to *me* are self-defeating, but I think this argument will work.
