Crazy idea of the day: a "follow" button on notifications

When people IM me out of the blue, so that I'm working in another program and a notification pops up, very often what they're sending me is a URL they want me to look at.

I would rather like it if notifications which contained only a URL had a "Follow" button, like this:



Then I could either dismiss the message, or go and see what they were talking about, without having to switch back to Empathy on the way.

I raised bug 640917 about this today, in case anyone else happens to agree with me that this would be nifty.

Something similar exists in Google Chrome/Chromium. When you highlight and then right-click on a domain name (it doesn't have to be a link), a menu pops up with the option to, "Go to robotfindskitten.org".

As you have suggested, some code that would detect the presence of a URL would work well. But, to avoid confusion with following people on Twitter, I think instead of 'Follow' you should use 'follow link', 'go to' or something similar.

In GNOME 3 URLs in notifications are linkified and can be clicked directly.
