Mercatores coenascent

Tesco's motto, which appears on their bottles of wine and the doors of their vans, is Mercatores coenascent. Now, this is nonsense Latin, but apparently the "coen…" was chosen to commemorate Jack Cohen, the founder of the supermarket.
However, someone here comes up with the delightful idea that it's a corruption of Mercatores coenas cient, "merchants prepare dinners" (coenas being a form of cenas).
