The Strange Little Girl
Jul. 24th, 2009 01:24 pmIn the ancient (mid-eighties) multiplayer game Shades there is a spirit called the Strange Little Girl who drifts around the system. If you see her and touch her fingers she will restore you to full health. This is very useful during battles and so on.
I was wishing today that there were really such spirits in the world, but all we have to make do with is coffee.

The Strange Little Girl drifts in.. As you reach towards the girl, she turns and looks at you. Her hands stretch out, and you notice a swirl of milky luminance deep within her eyes....as your fingers touch, you feel a strange tingling sensation course through you, refreshing and invigorating. There is as far as I know no backstory to this, about what she is, why she is there, or where she gets her powers; these are the only system messages which relate to her character. She used to wander through my dreams when I played Shades regularly. I recall that there is a line in the rather good Shades-related novel Cybergypsies1 about the protagonist trying to explain needing a break while driving as "Got to grab the girl", to the confusion of his passenger.
