Notes from a GUADEC talk on translation
Jul. 30th, 2010 08:49 amBy Silvia Miranda
"I am not a developer, I am a translator". Localisation from a linguistic POV.
The goal is to help people understand text which was originally written in another language.
Includes date&time formats, currencies, units, tone, style... as well as language.
Why? Because not everyone speaks English :) => More users.
Bad translations give a bad translation; just because someone wants to translate doesn't mean the translation will be good.
Needed:
Knowledge of source and target language. (Only translate into your native language.)
Ability to paraphrase.
Need a style guide. Don't forget to spellcheck.
