"Doctor of the Church" is a title in the Roman Catholic church, given to those whose writings have enriched the life of the whole Church. It has only been awarded 33 times in history, most recently to St. Thérèse de Lisieux.

Yesterday I discovered that, since it is a doctorate, there is academic dress prescribed for it. Since in order to be a Doctor of the Church you must be canonised, and in order to be canonised you must be dead, this is fairly high on the wonderful but pointless scale.
